Prep football -- Vikings feel at home on new field

SELAH -- Never underestimate the positive effects of sod.

Or, for that matter, a nice new spread of dirt under it.

Energized by a huge crowd and the debut of a renovated field, Selah's football team pitched a shutout with five interceptions to take a 42-0 victory over Davis at Karl Graf Field on Friday.

"It's a great feeling getting that shutout because we've never had one since I've been varsity," said senior Sheldon Lommers, a three-year varsity veteran. "We were making a lot of plays and getting to the ball -- a great first game."

Lommers, a 230-pound linebacker, ran for a touchdown out of Selah's short-yardage package in the first half and returned one of the Vikings' five picks for a score in the third quarter.

Tyler Porter, Mark Valencourt, Jake Richardson and Travis Luke all had interceptions for Selah's defense in the first half, and when Lommers got his first shot at one he whiffed.

"I thought, well, that was my chance and I missed it. The ball actually hit my face mask and I fumbled it," Lommers said of the third-quarter play. "But on the next play they came over the middle again and I got it. I turned and saw open field."

Lommers scooted 14 yards for the score, punctuating a defensive effort that held Davis to 81 yards, 34 of that coming on the Pirates' opening possession.

It was Selah's first shutout since 2004.

"It was a complete game for the defense and that was nice for those guys," said Selah coach Jeff Jamieson. "We have a lot of starters back on defense (eight) and it's great to see them come out and play like that. For a first game, we'll take it."

Four different backs rushed for touchdowns, and senior Justin Windsor turned in a solid debut at quarterback. Taking over for three-year starter Kyle Washut, Windsor passed for 113 yards and a touchdown, and he ran for a score.

"It was windy so we didn't throw as much as we might have, and we had a pretty good running game going," Jamieson said. "That took some pressure off Justin, but he did real well for a first game."

Davis junior Mitchell Vinsent rushed for 28 yards in the first half but left the field in the second quarter with an injury. He did not return in the second half.

Through the efforts of community volunteers, Selah's field got a complete makeover during the summer, replacing a poor-draining surface of grass that was laid over hard clay with no top soil.

"It's great out here now," Lommers said. "It's a real field."

Davis will open CBBN play next week with a Columbia Division game at Pasco. Selah will also play for keeps next Friday, hosting Wapato in a CWAC opener.
