Northwest League -- Boise batters Bears in romp

Yakima Herald-Republic

BOISE, Idaho -- It didn't happen this time for T.J. Hose.

Five days after the Bears right-hander pitched six scoreless innings in a 4-2 win over Boise, the Northwest League's top hitting team, the Hawks got even in a 9-4 win Thursday night before an announced crowd of 2,894 at Memorial Stadium.

Boise, with a team batting average of .287, rolled up 10 hits and eight runs -- all earned -- in only 32/3 innings this time as the Hawks kept their faint playoff hopes alive.

Spokane's win over Tri-City left the Indians' lead over Boise (41-29) at six games with six remaining -- all against each other. The teams had split their previous six meetings.

The Hawks scored five times in the second inning and three more in the fourth, during which Hose was relieved by Ricardo Taveras.

Yakima (24-46) scored three runs in the fifth, getting an RBI double by Ramon Castillo, after which Castillo moved up on a bases-loading walk and scored on a wild pitch. Another run scored on Duffy's single.

The Bears got their fourth run in the seventh on Alfredo Marte's two-out base hit.

Duffy, Marte and Jimmy Principe had two hits each while Duffy added two walks. Principe's batting average rose to a team-best .297 while Duffy, who had an extremely slow start and also missed time with a wrist injury, improved to .275.

Brenly, son of former big league catcher and manager Bob Brenly, and Ryan Flaherty had big nights for Boise. Brenly was 3-for-4, drove in three runs and scored two. Flaherty, also 3-for-4, doubled and added his eighth homer of the year, a solo shot in the seventh.

The Bears meet Tri-City tonight in Pasco before returning home against the Dust Devils on Saturday night.
