Local Report -- Reds' Garcia, Viveros earn PDL honors

Yakima Herald-Republic

YAKIMA -- Two prime reasons for the Yakima Reds' success this season was the play of forward Junior Garcia, and defender Juan Viveros, and both were rewarded for their efforts.

Garcia and Viveros were both named to the PDL's Western Conference All-Star Team, while Garcia was also honored as the PDL's scoring and goal-scoring champion.

Garcia, who missed most of last season because of a broken collarbone, returned with a vengence this season, scoring 15 goals and recording 10 assists in helping the Reds to a 9-6-1 record, their first winning season since 2001. Not only did his goal total lead the league, his 10 assists were second overall, tying with Michael Mattson of Central Florida.

Viveros joined Garcia on the Western Conference All-Star Team, which included players from both the Northwest and Southwest divisions, the latter consisting of 10 teams in California.

With Viveros leading the way, Yakima's defense allowed one goal or less in nine of its 16 games, including three shutouts.

The teams were voted on by team coaches and general managers.

* The strength of the Northwest Division this season was on full display in the Western Conference playoffs as both qualifiers ultimately reached the final, with regular-season runner-up Vancouver beating league champion Tacoma 4-1 for the title.

In the semifinals, Vancouver beat San Fernando 3-1 in overtime, while Tacoma shut out Fresno 3-0.

The Whitecaps run ended in the PDL semifinals last Saturday, when they suffered a 2-1 defeat to the Thunder Bay Chill. The Chill will face the Laredo Heat, a 2-0 semifinal winner over the Reading Rage, in Saturday's championship match.
