Prep soccer -- Cheney beats Grandview for state semifinal berth

Yakima Herald-Republic

GRANDVIEW -- Grandview's season ended one game short of making a trip to Sumner for the semifinals of the Class 2A state soccer tournament.

Oscar Guerrero struck first for the Greyhounds off Cesar Barriga's assist, but it was all Cheney from there as the Blackhawks (19-1 overall) won 3-1 in Grandview on Friday. Mitch Weller scored two goals before halftime, including the go-ahead tally on a penalty kick in the 27th minute, to end the Greyhounds season at 15-4 overall.

Grandview tried for the equalizer late, pushing five forwards into Cheney's zone. This opened the team up for a counter attack, and Steve Adams added a Blackhawk insurance goal in the 75th minute.

"We huddled after and all held onto each other," Grandview coach Anne Holden said. "I told them to hang their heads high. It's OK to be disappointed because the season has come to an end.

"But you have a district championship and league championship they can never take away from you."

First half: 1, Grandview, Oscar Guerrero (Cesar Barriga) 15:00; 2, Cheney, Mitch Weller (Aaron Walker) 24:00; 3, Cheney, Mitch Weller (PK) 27:00.

Second half: 4, Cheney, Steve Adams, 75:00.

Shots: Cheney 9, Grandview 9.

Saves: Sigley (C) 4, Teclo Perez (G) 4.
