SPOKANE -- It was a rough day for area standouts in the Class 4A and 3A tennis regional in Spokane on Friday.

West Valley sophomore Alexis Filliol, the defending 3A girls champion, was ousted in the first round and will not return to the Tri-Cities to defend her title. Kamiakin's Caitlin Bampton topped Filliol 4-6, 6-2, 6-2.

Davis senior Abe Chang, the district champion and a state qualifier last year, didn't even get the chance to play. His third-place finisher at districts earlier this week was marred by an eye injury that kept him sidelined this weekend.

Not all was lost for Yakima players. The West Valley team of Shae Oswalt and Brittany Gjestrum advanced to the semifinals of 3A girls doubles. Three of the remaining four teams advance to the state tournament.

Eisenhower's Nathan Mount, West Valley's Jeff Carlson and the Rams duo of Cyrus Brice and Daniel Wenker were eliminated.
