* What's the next best thing to sitting on the beach on Kauai's north shore and sippin' on a mai tai?
How about movin' and groovin' to laid-back pro surfer-turned-singer-songwriter Jack Johnson, who returns to the Gorge Amphitheatre tonight. (OK, the two don't come close, but at least getting to the Gorge doesn't require a plane ticket.)
Joining Johnson are Oakland's melodic indie-rock outfit Rouge Wave (which drew a jam-packed crowd to the Wookie stage at this year's Sasquatch! Music Festival), and the aptly titled jam band Culver City Dub Collective. The show starts at 7 p.m.
Tickets cost $39 and are only available through www.livenation.com.

* After a one-year hiatus, Tieton Community Days returns this weekend to Tieton's grassy city square.
It runs from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. today with game booths, food stands, arts and crafts vendors and a children's talent show beginning at 7 p.m.
Then on Saturday, you can rise and shine for the Tieton Lions Club pancake feed that runs from 6-9 a.m., followed at 9:45 a.m. with the kiddie parade. The community parade starts at 10 a.m.
From noon to 5 p.m. the game booths and vendors return, plus there'll be a dunk tank, car show, kids competitions, hands-on kite-making, face painting, piñatas and live entertainment including dancing horses.
Also as part of community days, the Mighty Tieton folks will host an open house from 1-3 p.m. Saturday at Harvest Hall, the remodeled, former church that now serves as a rental facility. Mighty Tieton is the name for the venture aimed at building a community of artisan businesses and hospitality enterprises in this tiny town.
And at noon and 1:30 p.m., you can take a tour of the Mighty Tieton Warehouse, which houses a letterpress print shop and artist studios, including a workspace occupied by Trimpin, a Seattle-based multi-media artist. (He's the guy who created that electronic, funnel-shaped sculpture of guitars at the center of the Experience Music Project in Seattle.)
For more information about the community days celebration, call Tieton City Hall at 673-3162. For more information about Mighty Tieton, visit www.mightytieton.com.
* Local band Point of Entry will celebrate its fifth anniversary this weekend with a couple of gigs at the Pastime at 125 E. Naches Ave. in Selah.
The band busts out the rock beginning at 9 tonight and Saturday.
For more information, call 697-8303.

* Next week, the place to get stoked is in ... Goldendale.
Yes, for five days, 200 extreme sports athletes from 12 countries will zoom down the historic -- not to mention steep and swervy -- Maryhill Loops Road off Washington Scenic Route 14 just south of Goldendale.
They're here for the Maryhill Festival of Speed, which is hosting the International Gravity Sports Association's World Championships. According to the IGSA Web site, this will be the first time the world championships -- which include downhill skateboarding, inline skating and street luge -- have been held outside of Europe.
The races are free to watch and a spectator shuttle is free on Aug. 30-31. You can find complete information at www.maryhillfestivalofspeed.com, or e-mail info@maryhillfestivalofspeed.com.
