VICTORIA, British Columbia -- Dan Whitaker fired a second-straight even-par 70 and is in a tie for 25th at the midpoint of the 42nd Pacific Coast Amateur Championship.

The Cle Elum golfer's 140 total is tied with four other players, nine shots behind Ryan Hallisey.

Hallisey, from Granite Bay, Calif., grabbed the lead after tying the Royal Colwood Golf Club's competitive course record of 8-under 62 Wednesday. That gave him a one-shot lead over Derek Tolan of Boulder, Colo.

Whitaker is part of a three-man team representing the Washington State Golf Association. The other two members, Jarin Todd and Richard Lee, helped Washington knock off two-time defending champion Pacific Northwest Golf Association in the annual Morse Cup team competition that is part of this event.

Todd (67-67--134) and Lee (71-66--137) helped Washington overcome a five-shot deficit after the first round to defeat Pacific Northwest by two shots. Only the top two scores among the three team members count towards the Cup, leaving Whitaker's 140 out of the mix.

LOCALS DONE AT STATE: Yakima's Christine Cook and Liz Tikriti completed play Wednesday in the PNGA Junior Girls Amateur Championship at Longview Country Club.

Cook lost her first flight match, 5 and 4, to Spokane's Kaitlin Parsons, and Tikriti fell in her fifth flight match on the 19th hole to Redmond's Ashley Danforth.

KING SCORES ACE ON APPLE GREEN: Gil King made his first hole-in-one memorable when he aced the signature apple-shaped 17th green at Apple Tree Golf Course on Sunday.

King used a 7-iron on the 157-yard shot.

Bob Girard, James Rogers and Joe Plaisance witnessed the shot.

CARDENAS HAS CHERRY HILLS ACE: Fred Cardenas, a member of Cherry Hill Golf course, scored his third hole-in-one at Cherry Hill. His first two, however, were not witnessed.

He is very excited to have had this witnessed by Jim Reid. He used a sand wedge to ace the 87-yard hole number 5 on July 27.
