YAKIMA -- A serious shoulder injury earlier this year which was re-aggravated just two weeks ago nearly kept Sue Ursino away from this year's Blossom Invitational at the Yakima Country Club.
But in the end, the lure of the tournament, in its 56th year, and her connections to the community won out.
The decision proved a wise one as Ursino, a 4-handicapper from Sahalee Country Club, captured her sixth Blossom title, by two strokes over Yakima's Pat Martin and Rachel Whittington.
Ursino, playing in her 35th Blossom, suffered the shoulder injury in February and returned to action five weeks ago. After hurting it again two weeks ago, she considered withdrawing before it improved enough to allow her to play.
Showing no ill effects Thursday and Friday, Ursino managed to post a 36-hole total of 151. Martin, who was trying to become the first local golfer to win this event, and Whittington were at 153.
In some ways, Ursino has to almost feel like a member of the community because of her links to the golf course, which she first played in the 1968 PNGA Junior Championships, and Yakima community.
Her grandfather, Dr. A.J. Lemieux, and her great uncle, Dr. Frank Ditter, were charter members at the Yakima Country Club, and her mother was born and grew up in Yakima, according to tournament official Gay Dorsey.
Karin Ross captured the low net title with a 36-hole score of 140.
