Breakfast aids Chernobyl kids

Yakima Children from Chernobyl provides medical respite to children from the areas of Belarus contaminated in the 1986 Chernobyl explosion.

To help with the costs of bringing children here for medical care, the group is hosting its first pancake breakfast fundraiser Sunday.

The group provides airfare, ground transportation, visas, and medical, dental and vision care at no cost to the child, the child's family or the government of Belarus. The average cost per child is around $2,000.

The breakfast will be from 7 to 10 a.m. at Yakima's United Christian Church, 317 S. 41st St. There will be pancakes, sausage, eggs, coffee, water and juice. Desserts will also be available.

Music will be provided by the local group, Mama's Pride.

Valley students in concert

Musicians from three local Catholic schools will present a band concert Wednesday night.

About 80 students will perform at 7 p.m. at Lightning Hall at La Salle High School, 3000 Lightning Way in Union Gap.

Members of the fifth- through eighth-grade bands from St. Paul Cathedral School and St. Joseph-Marquette School will join the La Salle band for the event.

Admission is free, and the concert is open to the public.

For more information, call Christine Conklin at the Diocese of Yakima at 965-7110.
