Prep roundup -- Cuillier, EV shut out Ephrata

YAKIMA -- Renee Cuillier's swing and fling got East Valley off to big start in Thursday's opening round of the CWAC district fastpitch tournament.

The senior clubbed a three-run homer and went 3-for-4, and she pitched six shutout innings with 11 strikeouts as the Red Devils blanked Ephrata 12-0 to open the postseason.

The eight-team tournament moves to Othello on Saturday and East Valley (17-4) will play Ellensburg (18-3) in a 10 a.m. semifinal. Selah (15-6) and regular-season champ Othello (20-1) will meet in the other semifinal at the same time.

The top three teams advance to the Class 2A state tournament next week in Selah.

Ashlynn Valicoff was also 3-for-4 for East Valley, which broke out for five runs in the first inning.

Harris drove in four runs and scored twice, while Bunyard scored three runs, and Natalie Fickes and Tori Slobig both had two hits and two RBI for the Vikings.

LA SALLE 16, OROVILLE 3: At La Salle, Lauren Nichols went 3-for-4 with three runs and three RBI, and Amy Holbrook and Melissa McCanna both drove in a pair of runs to help La Salle earn a state berth and reach the regional championship game.

La Salle, which has now won four straight, broke things open with a 10-run second inning.

Lauren DeGooyer had two hits and scored three times, and Tori Gonzalez also had two hits and scored twice for the Lightning, who play Kittitas at noon on Saturday at East Wenatchee's Sterling Complex.

At Kittitas, Dallas Maupin threw a no-hitter, and helped her own cause with two hits and three RBI as Kittitas (21-1) clinched a state berth and advanced to Saturday's regional championship against La Salle. Maupin struck out 10 in five innings.

Kasey Norlin added three hits and two RBI, and Sam Calahan had two hits and scored twice for the Coyotes, who beat La Salle in the district title game last spring.

PREP GOLF

Wanderscheid wins district title

ROSLYN -- Zach Wanderscheid fired a 7-over 79 to capture medalist honors and earn a return trip to state in the SCAC district tournament Wednesday on the Prospector Golf Course at Suncadia.

The Goldendale sophomore scored a two-shot victory over three golfers, including Highland's Minwoo Park and Naches Valley's Jon Forgey.

Wanderscheid was one of three Goldendale players qualifying for state, along with D.J. Cambell and Kyle Titus. Ron Lindhe is the alternate.

Highland, Zillah and Cle Elum had two state qualifiers each.

Royal's Laura Perkins was the girls medalist.
