Why not Hillary?

To the editor -- I guess we're never gonna get out of the mess we've been in for quite some time with the Bush administration. But wait until Obama is in there. Look out. We're in deep! And to boot, no experience, no knowledge, compared to Hillary.

Better think about it. Maybe some of you men don't believe in women in any kind of office, but really guys, we're not that bad. And Hillary would make a great president, don't you think?

By all means, vote, everyone. Get involved. It's great.

Abby wrong on doves

To the editor -- Usually Dear Abby's advice is somewhat accurate. But the comments on certain death awaiting released wedding doves, which ran April 28, I feel need clarification.

We had the uplifting moment at a memorial service on April 4 when 10 doves from Wings of Love were released. We took time to ensure these birds (white homing pigeons) would return to the safety of home. These birds are trained to fly home in a group; they're well cared for, and respected as the important flight symbol they represent.

Doves can be bought individually from stores. However, when these are released in ceremonies, they do not have the training to survive in the wild.

If you want to enjoy such a beautiful moment of celebration, please ensure a safe home trip by checking with the National White Dove Release Society (www.nwdrs.net/washington.htm). Investigate the process.

Yes, we checked; all the doves arrived home before their caregivers.

Let's save Fisher

To the editor -- As a nongolfer, may I have a say about Fisher Park, this little gem in our city? I'm a frequent pedestrian on 40th Avenue, and find it a breath of fresh air, literally and figuratively. What a beautiful entrance as renovated just this past year -- so well kept with flowers, walkways and even a little eating area. If this area is open to the public, as it perhaps should be, please let us know this. How good it would be, especially on a hot summer day, to enjoy a snack and a cool drink here in the shade.

So what might be done soon to rescue this special, so-easy-to-access park?

Here's a suggestion or two. What about a tiny safe spot for toddlers while parents and older children are playing?

And how about ways to use it in the off-season? Small-scale events could take place both inside or out. Indoors, there could be lectures, music programs, card and board games, etc. Outdoors, we who love snow could walk about and elementary-age kids could play some old-fashioned snow games.

Let's have more ideas from the public on ways to prevent closure of this park.

Beets and diesel

To the editor -- Plastic is made from petroleum. Why not mix it back with alcohol to make diesel? Why not grow sugar beets to make the alcohol to make the diesel?

Why not join the Yakama Nation with both state and federal funds to create our own growing economy? We have one factory in Toppenish. Could it be used or would we need another?
