Wapato, perhaps the most ethnically diverse city in the Yakima Valley, is celebrating its cultural heritage -- and its 100th birthday -- with a series of speakers from each ethnic community: Native American, white, Japanese, Filipino and Hispanic.
The Wapato Legends Speaker Series, as well as the annual tamale festival, help highlight the city's centennial this year.
All events are at the Wapato Community Center, 1009 S. Camas Ave., unless otherwise noted.
Here's the schedule:
* 6-7:30 p.m. today: The Yakama Nation, presented by Pam Fabela, assistant administrator for the Yakama Nation Cultural Heritage Center Museum.
* 10 a.m.-5:30 p.m. Oct. 18: The Wapato Tamale Festival in downtown Wapato. Features tamales, Filipino food, barbecue, Native American fry bread, cultural performances, vendors, wine tasting, car show, kids' activities and the 5K Tamale Run.
* 4-5 p.m. Oct. 18: The Hispanic Experience, presented by Ricardo Garcia, recently retired Radio KDNA executive director, and his wife, Monica. At the Liberty Theater, 112 E. Third.
* 6-7:30 p.m. Oct. 24: The Filipino Experience, presented by Rey Pascua.
* 6-7:30 p.m. Nov. 7: The European Experience, presented by Nibbs Menard.
* 6-7:30 p.m. Dec. 5: The Japanese Experience, presented by Lon Inaba.
