The maverick is BACK? From where? Where has John McCain been? According to you, he’s been “courting the right wing of his party during the primaries and caucuses.” He’s been picking a running mate who can “take on all comers” and “energize the party faithful” to free John McCain to be himself. Nothing suggests this political expediency will simply disappear after the election.
Report ViolationJohn McCain gives one speech and you decide he is suddenly unbeholden to all the people who got him onto the podium. Yet, you admit that John McCain is incapable of winning his own political battles or energizing his own party. As you say, John McCain was not free to "be himself" until he picked an unknown from the party fringe-right to fight his battles for him. Pathetic.
You "expected no less" from this maverick than that he pick a charismatic unknown from the party's fringe-right with whom to partner in Washington, DC. In a McCain/Palin administration, do you really think the party's right wing-nuts are going to suddenly wither away under his strong, clear, maverick gaze? Get a grip.
I’ve learned not to expect much critical thinking from the editorial board of the Yakima Herald-Republic. This column further lowers my expectations.
